Infrared radiation is present all around and is emitted by objects at room temperatures. Thermography is the process by which individuals can see the infrared spectrum of light with the help of devices made specifically for that purpose. An objects infrared radiation is subject to the change in temperature and hence this can be tracked with the help of an infrared video camera. These thermal cameras are an important element in several military and security aspects and help in activities like tracking and surveillance. Infrared radiation is based on heat and these cameras can capture images even through barriers like fog, smoke or complete darkness. Thermography as a concept has been around for ages but it was put into commercial and practical use since the past fifty years. This technology is commonly used as "Night Vision" which is crucial for military and security purposes to track and maintain vigilance.
Thermal Imaging cameras are based on the thermograph principal and are one of the most important elements for firefighters. These cameras can withstand substantial levels of heat and as a result are regularly used by firefighters to detect human presence in case of rescue operations. Another avenue where thermal cameras are of vital importance is the field of medicine and science. Thermal devices can be used to track contagious and hazardous diseases like Swine Flu or SARS and help curb the spread of an epidemic. The thermal camera bears close resemblance to a normal camcorder but works on the principle of creating infrared radiation into visible light. Since humans cannot view infrared light, the thermal cameras make use of false color to help make the radiation visible. The colors used in the spectrum range from white for hottest areas to purple or black for coldest. Besides detection thermal imaging cameras are also used by scientists to study animal behavior patterns as well as planetary activity. Interestingly thermal cameras have also been used by new age photographers to create unique photographs that go beyond the boundaries of a standard camera. Infrared detection usually happens with two main principles namely Thermal and Photonic. The former method uses the dependency of heat while the latter depends on photoelectric conduction to generate thermal images. Thermal cameras are a great tool for electricians to help detect overheating in wiring as well as faulty signals to curb the potential hazard before it causes an accident. Thermal technology has a variety of benefits and will go on to becoming an imperative tool in a multitude of industries.
